Zatlers delivers short acceptance speech; vows to unify ideals and goals

RIGA, May 31 (LETA) – Newly elected President Valdis Zatlers addressed the Saeima plenary following his election today, thanking the deputies for the trust placed in him. He vowed to serve the nation with his best intentions.

Zatlers underlined that Latvia regained its independence and made its greatest achievements when ideals and goals were in tandem. He said that at this time goals dominate, but ideals lag behind. Goals without ideals split society, he opined.

Zatlers ended his short speech, paraphrasing famous Latvian writer Rudolfs Blaumanis’ words: “My gold is my people, my honor is their honor.”
