NATO member states have agreed on the date of the meeting of the heads of state and government of the alliance. The NATO Summit in Riga is scheduled for 28 and 29 November 2006.

As Foreign Minister Pabriks noted, he is “truly delighted that Riga will have an opportunity to receive NATO leaders at the time between two significant celebrations – the anniversary of the proclamation of the independence of the Republic of Latvia and Christmas, thus making the year-end an unforgettable and very special occasion in the history of Latvian foreign policy. With the greatest sense of responsibility, the Foreign Ministry has already started relevant preparations within its competence.”

As previously reported, the decision was passed at the NATO Foreign Ministers’ meeting on 8 December last year that the agenda from next year’s summit in Riga would include a discussion concerning NATO’s military and political transformation as a response to today’s security challenges.
