Friday, January 9, Vilnius – President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus congratulated the participants of the South American Lithuanian Youth Congress.

The President recalled warmly his meetings with Lithuanian youth community in Sao Paulo, Montevideo and Buenos Aires, and thanked them for their cordiality and for preserving and cherishing the Lithuanian spirit.

“This year Lithuania celebrates a special anniversary, the Millennium of its name. This is an exceptional gift of history to our generation as we can stop and look with pride in our hearts at the long and rich past of our country. This history has been built for many many years by the Lithuanian diaspora, by our parents and grandparents who preserved, protected and cherished their native language and culture and who carried the hope of restoring Lithuania’s independence in the difficult times,” the President said and underlined with appreciation that today Lithuanian young people living abroad continued to carry this flag of national identity.

The President said with confidence this year would be a special year for young emigrants because as they join Lithuania in celebrating the anniversary of its name they will feel once again deep in their hearts their roots and bonds with their homeland.

President Adamkus wished the Congress every success in this present event and in making preparations for the upcoming Lithuanian Youth World Congress.
