An agreement to build the so-called Poland-Lithuania Gas Interconnection pipeline was signed on Thursday by Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland.

National leaders, including Polish Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz signed the contracts on Thursday on the sidelines of an EU summit in Brussels.

The interconnector between Poland and Lithuania aimed at diversifying the Baltics’energy supplies, lessening dependence on Russia, is said to end the long lasting isolation of the region.

As Michal Owczarek reports, some Polish analysts have argued the project would be more beneficial to the Baltic States rather than Poland for which that eastern interconnector is less important than the ones on its western border.

“We are launching a project that will allow us to overcome historic limitations, including the direction of gas supplies from East to West,” Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz said.
