Meet the Baltic Caucuses

The Senate Baltic Freedom Caucus and the House Baltic Caucus are bipartisan membership organizations.

 

      The Senate Baltic Freedom Caucus is led by Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL).

The House Baltic Caucus is led by Congressman Don Bacon (D-NE) and Congressman Salud Carbajal (D-CA)

The House Baltic Caucus is a registered Congressional Member Organization in the United States and is a bipartisan group within the U.S. House or Representatives.  The Senate Baltic Freedom Caucus is a Senate counterpart of the House Caucus.

 

Both the respective House and Senate caucuses promote mutual interests between the United States and the Baltic states.  Here are some key points.

    • Formation: It was established in 1997 as a response to the Baltic States’ reclamation of independence following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The caucus advocates for U.S. support in areas like defense, democracy, and free-market economics in these countries.
    • Membership: The caucuses consists of members from both the Democratic and Republican parties. It has co-chairs from both parties to ensure bipartisan support.
    • Objectives:
        • Strengthening Relations: It works to maintain strong relationships with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, emphasizing their importance as NATO allies and partners in European security.
        • Legislation Support: The caucuses supports legislation aimed at bolstering the defense capabilities of the Baltic nations, often focusing on countering Russian influence or aggression in the region.
        • Cultural and Economic Ties: It promotes cultural exchanges and economic partnerships that benefit both the U.S. and the Baltic countries.

        • Members of the caucuses engage in legislative efforts like supporting resolutions or funding for security initiatives, such as the Baltic Security Initiative, which is aimed at enhancing the military capabilities of these nations.
