LITHUANIA ENCOURAGES TO COMBAT VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN MORE ACTIVELY

On 12 March at the 7th session of the UN Human Rights Council, Lithuania’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office and other international organisations at Geneva, Ambassador Eduardas Borisovas gave a speech on the issue of violence against women prevention in the name of the Baltic and Nordic countries.

In this speech, which was given at Lithuania’s initiative, all countries were urged to combat the phenomenon of violence against women more actively. The Ambassador indicated that combating violence against women had been a priority issue for a long time already in the area of cooperation among the Nordic and Baltic counties on the topic of gender equality. Besides, the efforts in this area of other international organisations, such as the United Nations and the Council of Europe, are also supported actively.

‘A priority must be given to implement means of prevention at the national level. Certain attention should also be dedicated to the work with violators,’ said E. Borisovas.

The 7th session of the Human Rights Council is held on 3-28 March. Lithuania is the observer to the Human Rights Council.
