TALLINN – Estonia backs the election of South Korean Foreign Minister Ban Ki-Moon as U.N. secretary-general, the Foreign Ministry reported.
The Baltic state will support Ban in the U.N. General Assembly vote on the successor of Secretary-General Kofi Annan, whose term expires at the end of the year, ministry spokespeople said.
In mid-September, the three Baltic states jointly nominated Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga for the position.
At the beginning of this month, after consultations with the Lithuanian and Estonian leaders, Vike-Freiberga announced she was pulling out of the race.
Her decision came after U.N. straw polls placed Ban at the top of the list.
