ANNOUNCEMENT BY THE EMBASSY OF LATVIA IN WASHINGTON, DC

On March 7, 2008, the Embassy issued a statement regarding a petition drive in Latvia to modify Latvia’s Constitution to empower the electorate by referendum vote to dismiss the Parliament and to allow for a new Parliamentary election.

The petition drive will be held from March 12, 2008 through April 10, 2008. Latvian citizens living in the U.S. may sign the petition at the Latvian Embassy in Washington, DC at 2306 Massachusetts Avenue, telephone (202) 328-23840.
The hours of operation are: Monday and Friday from 10:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m. and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 12 noon to 4:00 p.m.

An alternate site for signing the petition is the Latvian Ev. Luth. Church, 400 Hurley Avenue, Rockville, MD 20850 on March 30, 2008 through April 6, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Telephone: (301) 340-8719.

The sites will be closed on the Latvian State holidays March 21 and March 24.

All citizens of Latvia who have reached the age of 18 and have a valid Latvian passport are eligible to sign the petition. A valid passport has to be presented to the precinct worker at the site. Personal codes will not be accepted in lieu of a passport.
